The past few years have seen a Burlesque renaissance in the heart of east London. But though many think they know what Burlesque is, they are not aware of its rich history and complex origins. This documentary from Vintage Film Productions has put together an enlightening documentary, rich in footage of the dance halls of the early 20th Century until the 1950s when bombshells began to dominate Hollywood movies. Bump & Grind: The Story Of Burlesque seeks to educate the viewer and allow them to understand how the moves, the costumes and the attitudes of Burlesque were formed.

The film includes Burlesque stars of past and present. Legends such as Lili St Cyr, Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose Lee are seen performing seductive strip teases together as well as cult dancers like Faith Bacon and Georgia Sothern, known for their more unusual performances. Modern day dancers are not neglected, footage from the Whoopee Club's Tournament of Tease allows the viewer to compare the modern day dancers to their counterparts of yesteryear. Several of the entrants to the tournament offer insight into why Burlesque has returned to such a high level of popularity, such as Jo King and Kiki Kaboom.

Bump & Grind explains how the dance moves associated with Burlesque were formed, and demonstrates the influence that mass immigration has had on the dance. New York provided the perfect melting pot for the French can-can, the Hawaiian hula and the North-African belly dance to merge, giving birth to the dance moves that are known as Burlesque today. The film invites us into an exotic world which is eccentric at times, for example Rosita Royce's famous routine in which she was undressed by doves and parrots. Unfortunately, as the film explains, things didn't always turn out well for the birds involved.

What makes this documentary so unique is the quality of footage included. Rather than relying on modern day footage to tell the story, the best stock footage has been sourced providing an intense visual narrative of the New York entertainment scene of the 1920s and 1930s. Bump & Grind is an extremely insightful film, offering explanations of the origins of the bikini and the term 'blonde bombshell'. It leaves you feeling educated about an incredibly interesting area of modern history.
