Now lives: Hackney, London Town

What did you want to be when you were a kid?
My earliest memory would be a nurse.

Have you always been into art?
I got into art in my early teens, but I've always admired cartoons, full length animated movies and comics.

Tell us about your career path - education, internships, first jobs....
Oh, it's really not that glamorous haha. In Hong Kong I went to the German International school where they taught German and English and from which I graduated at the age of 17. I went to college in Australia, where I received my BA in Visual Communications and Masters of Design. Then I returned to Hong Kong for a year to pursue my career in graphic design. I was working as a junior graphic designer for a British design consultancy called Monopoly. However I decided being a graphic designer wasn't exactly cut out for me, albeit an interesting work experience. So it struck me that I should just do art instead, I've painted before and enjoyed it. I find it so much more expressive and liberating and have decided to stick with it.

How did you get into creating art for a living?
When I moved to London I tried to look for another graphic design job and so in the spare time that I had between sending out applications, I thought I'd paint, to bring back a skill I haven't used in a while and you know something, I loved it so much that I kind of dropped the graphic design job search altogether. Of course it's tougher, but I've learnt that doing something that one enjoys is worth the struggle.

Is it always fun? What's the best thing about what you do?
Yeah, I can honestly say so that it's definately more fun. This will sound obvious but with graphic design, you can be creative.. to an extent, because after all one works with clients and the work is constrained. Yet with art, if I have a ridiculous and vivid idea I want to project, I don't need to seek any review or approval to convey it. I just enjoy the freedom of projecting onto canvas or paper whatever the hell is on my mind, haha.

What other projects are you currently working on?
I am currently working on a mini art collaboration with Erik Hassle of Island Records and an upcoming exhibition.

So what's next with your art?
Right now I just enjoy painting. My favourite subjects are messed up, Hannah Barbera-esque or early 90's cartoon characters influenced by fast food and urban culture. I'm trying to focus on two medias: digital and painted works. What I mean with digital is turning my cartoon character inspired art into vector, which just makes it look stunning. It's great this way, because it ads depth to what I can create.

I always get homesick when I travel! What do you miss most about London?
London isn't my home, but, what I can tell you about missing it when I leave, is the cool weather and the vivid blend of urban and multicultural life of it. When I last returned to Hong Kong to see the fam, I was slapped in the face with the crazy humidity and heat. That's when I thought:"Yep, I'm definitely home."

Where do you look for ideas when you hit a brick wall?
Hm, thats a good one. Sounds corny but I go for walks or I flick through glossy magazines. Then I realize that that didn't really help and think of the last crazy idea I had. I know, the ideas process can be a puzzling one.

What brands do you admire?
Jeremy Scott, Viktor & Rolf and Marc Jacobs.

What are your thoughts on girls streetwear - Married to the Mob, Hellz Bellz etc.
I think what they do is great, because these are girls' streetbrands owned by girls. I guess it's the fact that they understand what we want and therefore cater or deliver effectively. In a nut shell, they've hit the nail on the head and are producing some dope gear. I like the tough LA feel of Hellz Bellz and the HipHop related slogan tees of MOB.

What music are you listening to right now?
80's R&B... DeBarge, Patrice Rushen, etc... and a healthy serving of Spank Rock

Whats the future for you?
Well, hopefully I'll be able to paint and illustrate for the rest of my life, haha. I intend to stay in London for while and to constantly soak in my surroundings and turning it into satirical and engaging art.

Can you name your TOP 5 FAVE right now?
Reas
Hanna Barbera (although they're long gone)
Brown rice
Vintage illustrated books
Pierre Hardy (hopefully I can get myself a pair soon, ha)
