Since the labels launch in 2006, the identical twins have earned a multitude of A-list fans with their signature sophisticated punk aesthetic, including Courtney Love and Estelle, as well as a BFA nomination in 2008 and sponsorship from the Topshop NewGen scheme in 2009. ;
Although they’re based in London, a city they adore for its “genuine love of individuality”, the girls were born in a small town just outside Cologne in West Germany. After leaving Germany to go travelling, the sisters enjoyed a brief stint in modelling, before scoring internships with designer, Robert Cary-Williams and milliner, Stephen Jones, which pushed them to study fashion at none other than Central St Martins, of course! After graduating, they immediately made an impact on the London fashion scene, swiftly becoming famous for their combination of soft shapes and rock n roll edge. Their debut LFW show was styled by the iconic Patti Wilson and before long; Felder Felder was being stocked in the most high-end stores in the country and was named “one of the best selling brands in Browns Focus”. The girls were fast becoming a fashion force to be reckoned with, jumping across the globe to showcase their collections in various cities, including New York, Berlin, and, of course, London.
Felder Felder’s collections all feature hints of the girls signature look, lush fabrics and structured shapes given a grungy makeover by their trademark asymmetry and their use of strong architectural lines. The twins also design their own accessories – mainly studded cuffs with a tough, gothic feel, which integrate perfectly within their collections. ;

;
For their A/W10 collection, the girls cited Iggy Pop, the infamous lead singer of punk band The Stooges as their biggest influence, stating “Obviously, Iggy does not wear very much on stage, so we are talking more about the attitude and mood we aimed to capture in this collection”. The punk rock references are strewn throughout the collection, sometimes shown subtly through studded straps and sometimes much more evidently, like by my personal favourite piece of the collection, a cropped and fitted black bolero with studded collars. Their latest collection for S/S10 also features a distinctively biker kind of feel, with edgy leather jackets and studded skirts, as well as artfully slashed leather trousers, though is given a touch of elegance in typical Felder Felder style - through sculptured bodycon and shift dresses.
The girls say the typical Felder Felder girl is” inspired, individual and knows what she wants. She is a woman who is fun to be around”, and I thing that sums the labels aesthetic perfectly. ; It’s safe to say that these incredibly talented twins just seem to be getting more adventurous every season and I, for one, just cannot wait to see what the future has in store for Felder Felder. I think we’re going to be in for one hell of a wild and well-dressed ride…
CHECK IT OUT HERE.

NAVNEET GILL

BEAUTY - BRING HOME THE SPA

Tired feet, distressed joints, rough skin, wouldn’t you appreciate not only a therapist at your home but at your convenience? While most female emcees are walking around looking like stanky extras from 98's The Players Club, (fantastic film BTW), Miss Banks is cute, sweet and totally looks like the girl who won best smile in your high school superlatives. The way she is taking over the game is due to her itty bitty potty mouth, which is unexpected on tracks yet guiltlessly enjoyable all at the same time. A cute girl saying dirty words, what more could you ask for? In her song entitled “The Chill$” Miss Banks raps in one verse of the song saying, ’Try somethin’ slick and get ya dick hacked up./ So you can either hit the door and peace or watch your meat hit the floor in pieces, believe this’. Yeah, believe that, because she really does say it. Perhaps saying that would prove to be more effective the next time a lame tries hitting on you at the club, just sayin’.

;
Without intentions of taking anything seriously Azealia managed to generate a lot of buzz around her little ‘ole self in NYC and the online community in a little over a year. This got her thinking to take her style from just some freestyle shit to some full fledged hip-hop shit. Although she is fairly new to this whole rapper shtick, she has already managed to do many impressive things in her own right. She’s only 18 years old, writes 100% of all her own material and has worked with the likes of super DJ/Producer Diplo while she was still just a jailbait beauty attending LaGuardia High School of Music Art and Performing Arts. Banks incorporates a lot of electro beats in her music which makes it different enough to stand out amongst the masses, as well as poppy and fun to dance to in the midst of her bad girl style storytelling.

;
We are team Azealia Banks and you should be too. She’s a young, fresh, sassy little firecracker with freestyles that are NOT to be slept on and shows a lot of promise in her upcoming career. Although if you’re a boy in skinny jeans, you best beware, Miss Banks don’t play dat, as she says on her Myspace page, “Who said that was poppin in the first place?”

Women have a great presence in Love's work, usually depicted looking sexy but mysterious. She creates ;art that is part fantasy, part reality, guiding us through a surreal world complete with nail salons and chicken shops. Welcome to the world of Cath Love...
Name: ;CathLoveAge: ;25Hometown: Hong KongNow lives: ;Hackney, London Town

;What did you want to be when you were a kid?My earliest memory would be a nurse.

Have you always been into art?I got into art in my early teens, but I've always admired cartoons, full length animated movies and comics.
Tell us about your career path - education, internships, first jobs....Oh, it's really not that glamorous haha. In Hong Kong I went to the German International school where they taught German and English and from which I graduated at the age of 17. I went to college in Australia, where I received my BA in Visual Communications and Masters of Design. Then I returned to Hong Kong for a year to pursue my career in graphic design. I was working as a junior graphic designer for a British design consultancy called Monopoly. However I decided being a graphic designer wasn't exactly cut out for me, albeit an interesting ;work experience. So it struck me that I should just do art instead, I've painted before and enjoyed it. I find it so much more expressive and liberating and have decided to stick with it.
;How did you get into creating art for a living?When I moved to London I tried to look for another graphic design job and so in the spare time that I had between sending out applications, I thought I'd paint, to bring back a skill I haven't used in a while and you know something, I loved it so much that I kind of dropped the graphic design job search altogether. Of course it's tougher, but I've learnt that doing something that one enjoys is worth the struggle.
Is it always fun? What's the best thing about what you do?Yeah, I can honestly say so that it's definately more fun. This will sound obvious but with graphic design, you can be creative.. to an extent, because after all one works with clients and the work is constrained. Yet with art, if I have a ridiculous and vivid idea I want to project, I don't need to seek any review or approval to convey it. I just enjoy the freedom of projecting onto canvas or paper whatever the hell is on my mind, haha.

What other projects are you currently working on?I am currently working on a mini art collaboration with Erik Hassle of Island Records and an upcoming exhibition.

;So what's next with your art?Right now I just enjoy painting. My favourite subjects are messed up, Hannah Barbera-esque or early 90's cartoon characters influenced by fast food and urban culture. I'm trying to focus on two medias: digital and painted works. What I mean with digital is turning my cartoon character inspired art into vector, which just makes it look stunning. It's great this way, because it ads depth to what I can create.

I always get homesick when I travel! What do you miss most about London?London isn't my home, but, what I can tell you about missing it when I leave, is the cool weather and the vivid blend of urban and multicultural life of it. When I last returned to Hong Kong to see the fam, I was slapped in the face with the crazy humidity and heat. That's when I thought:"Yep, I'm definitely home."

;
Where do you look for ideas when you hit a brick wall?Hm, thats a good one. Sounds corny but I go for walks or I flick through glossy magazines. Then I realize that that didn't really help and think of the last crazy idea I had. I know, the ideas process can be a puzzling one. ;

What brands do you admire?Jeremy Scott, Viktor & Rolf and Marc Jacobs.

What are your thoughts on girls streetwear - Married to the Mob, Hellz Bellz etc.I think what they do is great, because these are girls' streetbrands owned by girls. I guess it's the fact that they understand what we want and therefore cater or deliver effectively. In a nut shell, they've hit the nail on the head and are producing some dope gear. I like the tough LA feel of Hellz Bellz and the HipHop related slogan tees of MOB.

What music are you listening to right now?80's R&B... DeBarge, Patrice Rushen, etc... and a healthy serving of Spank Rock

; ;
Whats the future for you?Well, hopefully I'll be able to paint and illustrate for the rest of my life, haha. I intend to stay in London for while and to constantly soak in my surroundings and turning it into satirical and engaging art. ;
;
Can you name your TOP 5 FAVE right now? ;ReasHanna Barbera (although they're long gone)Brown riceVintage illustrated booksPierre Hardy (hopefully I can get myself a pair soon, ha) ; ;www.cathlove.com ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ;www.cathlove-cathlove.blogspot.com

;
LILY MERCER

CULTURE - BUMP & GRIND: THE STORY OF BURLESQUE

The past few years have seen a Burlesque renaissance in the heart of east London. But though many think they know what Burlesque is, they are not aware of its rich history and complex origins. This documentary from Vintage Film Productions has put together an enlightening documentary, rich in footage of the dance halls of the early 20th Century until the 1950s when bombshells began to dominate Hollywood movies. Bump & Grind: The Story Of Burlesque seeks to educate the viewer and allow them to understand how the moves, the costumes and the attitudes of Burlesque were formed.

The film includes Burlesque stars of past and present. Legends such as Lili St Cyr, Sally Rand and Gypsy Rose Lee are seen performing seductive strip teases together as well as cult dancers like Faith Bacon and Georgia Sothern, known for their more unusual performances. Modern day dancers are not neglected, footage from the Whoopee Club's Tournament of Tease allows the viewer to compare the modern day dancers to their counterparts of yesteryear. Several of the entrants to the tournament offer insight into why Burlesque has returned to such a high level of popularity, such as Jo King and Kiki Kaboom.

Bump & Grind explains how the dance moves associated with Burlesque were formed, and demonstrates the influence that mass immigration has had on the dance. New York provided the perfect melting pot for the French can-can, the Hawaiian hula and the North-African belly dance to merge, giving birth to the dance moves that are known as Burlesque today. The film invites us into an exotic world which is eccentric at times, for example Rosita Royce's famous routine in which she was undressed by doves and parrots. Unfortunately, as the film explains, things didn't always turn out well for the birds involved.

What makes this documentary so unique is the quality of footage included. Rather than relying on modern day footage to tell the story, the best stock footage has been sourced providing an intense visual narrative of the New York entertainment scene of the 1920s and 1930s. Bump & Grind is an extremely insightful film, offering explanations of the origins of the bikini and the term 'blonde bombshell'. It leaves you feeling educated about an incredibly interesting area of modern history. ;

Bump & Grind: The Story Of Burlesque is available on DVD from Amazon and all good DVD retailers. The same goes for anything that director (and her ex-boyfriend) Spike Jonze does. So if you put two and two together (the Where the Wild Things Are movie and the music created for it) then you’re going to come out with something insanely good for your senses. ;

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I ran into a Starbucks the day before leaving and was fortunate enough to be faced with a copy of the soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are at the cash register. Since I was leaving before the movie came out, instinct had me grab it; and I haven’t put it down since. This only makes it even harder for me to wait for the film.

;Karen O and the Kids is a massive collaboration involving other Indie rockers such as Tom Biller of the Afternoons (co-producer on the soundtrack), Yeah Yeah Yeahs band mates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner, with Tristan Bechet (Services), Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Oscar Michel (Gris Gris), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska), and a couple of kids that they wrangled together to form a delightfully candid make-shift choir.

“I’m in Spike’s big-kid club. Most of the creative people that Spike works with are children trapped in grownup’s bodies. Spike came to me with the idea of the music having a similar mood to The Langley Schools Music Project, Innocence and Despair, which is a children’s choir singing melancholy pop songs by David Bowie and the Beach Boys, etc”, O told Paste magazine. “I don’t know how close we got to that idea in the end, but the intention was to write simple melodies that were emotionally complex—something that both kids and adults would appreciate,” ;

Karen O has such a broad range of personalities when it comes to music and anything she creates never fails to translate. Perfectly matching the emotions of the film’s main character Max, as he faces fear, freedom, anger, elation and doubt. There is a song in here for everything you, and he, have ever felt in life. Tracks like ‘Heads Up’ and ‘All Is Love’ make you want to pump a grizzly monster fist and howl at the moon, whilst ‘Worried Shoes’ and ‘Hideaway’, with Karen’s lullaby voice, give you a feeling that even though you’re far away from home, everything’s going to be alright. So, without hesitation, I dub this the Feel Good soundtrack of the year. ;
KARA MARTIN

PROFILES - NIKI PILKINGTON

If you've been into WAH Nails this Autumn, chances are you've spotted the adorable illustrations of Niki Pilkington hanging on the walls. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Do you remember those books? The ones with the pictures of pretty girls & you had to cut out clothes and fold the flaps over them? Well I wanted to be one of them. ;

;

;
Have you always been into art?
Always.

;
Tell us about your career path - education, internships, first jobs...
I worked in a pub on a beach near my home every summer holiday & could be found drawing any time in between, then whilst doing my A-levels, I started working in a clothes shop, which really encouraged me to develop my own style even further. It's not hard to stand out where I live. It's still very traditional, and this almost encouraged me to be a bit different. I never liked wearing jeans & a t-shirt, so I never did- I could find all the bits that other people didn't want in charity shops. After A-Levels, I received a Distinction in my Art Foundation course, which then led me to Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication, London. This is where I studied Fashion Promotion / Illustration. The reason I didn't follow a strict illustration route, is because I love fashion, I always have, and I wanted to keep a strong fashion element in my work & this felt like the right way to do it. Fashion promotion meant that I got a understanding of the industry, without actually having to make the clothes-I could just draw them. I made it a priority to keep drawing as much as possible, so each of my projects had a strong illustrated quality. In my final year, I created my book 'Voyeur Fifty. My Obsession With Girls': It was inspired by the girls that you see everyday. I have a compulsion, one which makes me stare at these girls because to me they look amazing. I almost always have to stop them to take their photo to turn them into an illustration, so this is what I did for the book...fifty times. I graduated earlier this year with a First Class BA Hons Degree. ;

;
How did you get into creating art for a living?
By seeing that people liked what I actually enjoyed doing, and that I could make money from it too. ; ;

;
Is it always fun? What's the best thing about what you do?
Yes, I'd say it is always fun - difficult but fun. I think if you could sit next to your client from start to finish, then it would be a lot easier, but because almost all communication is over the internet or over the phone, it's hard to visualise exactly what they want, but it's all worth it when they publish what you've done. I'd say the best thing is probably being your own boss. Knowing that you can literally work from anywhere and at anytime. That, and the people I draw along the way. ;

;
What other projects are you currently working on?
Mainly commission work for magazines and books all over the world, but as well as the commercial stuff, ; I've been asked to do a lot of portraits for people as Christmas presents, so I'm working really hard at the moment to keep up with all that. For me, it's good to try to keep a balance between the big publications, as well as the personal stuff & especially so early on in my career - it's great to have the chance to do both. ; ;

;
So what's next with your art?
Working on new ways of displaying/presenting my illustrations is my top priority, it's important to me that my work doesn't become repetitive, so I desperately want to publish my own book, but it's just finding the time to do it in between all the other things. I also want to draw more guys. I have a magnetic attraction to stopping intriguing girls in their tracks, photographing them, then illustrating them, but I don't get the same impulse with guys - I think because I don't get the 'oh I'd love to own that dress' or 'I wonder where she got those shoes from' thoughts, they don't catch my eye, but it's something that I want to start doing.

;
I always get homesick when I travel! What do you miss most about London?
I recently left London to return to my studio in Wales, and I think that I miss the girls the most! The sheer volume of illustration possibilities that pass you by from day to day on the streets of London is ridiculous, you just don't get the same fashionistas up here- well not typical ones anyway. ; I've been lucky enough to turn this round though. I'm working on new work which concentrates on the everyday characters that I see here in Wales - the old farmers, the ladies in aprons brushing their front step, the sheepdogs etc etc, it's quite refreshing to see these everyday people that I grew up around, in a new creative way.

;
Where do you look for ideas when you hit a brick wall? ;
I'm always coming up with ideas for new projects, ; but it's usually when I'm snowed under with other work, so I write them down, and as a result, have a constant on going to-do list. So any time that I'm struggling for ideas, I just work my way through the to-do list. But I think in the first place, they just come from what I see around me. I don't go looking for inspiration, I don' think it's something you can force. ; ;

;
What are your thoughts on girls streetwear - Married to the Mob, Hellz Bellz etc.
I think that we're at a stage now where people - especially girls, find that clothing is the best way to express their personalities and feelings, and this is something which I would definitely encourage...the more that girls dress to suit their personalities, the better it is for me, because I get to draw them.

;
What music are you listening to right now?
Any thing that I can think to type into Spotify. I don't like to listen to anything twice (apart from the classics) or limit myself to any one type of music, I just listen to what I fancy at the time, it depends on what I'm doing. ;

;
Whats the future for you?
There is already a lot in the pipeline for me. Work in other countries and many projects will be keeping me very occupied for a while. There are some interesting projects in particular that will see my illustrations being used in a unique manner which I am excited about. The most important thing to me is to keep my head down and keep doing what I'm passionate about. You can keep posted on my blog on my website (www.nikipilkington.com).
